Beijing Foreign Studies University
Beijing Foreign Studies University, or BFSU, is a prestigious university in China under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education. It is one of China’s top universities listed under the Project 985 and Project 211, both comprising top universities in China. At present, BFSU is one of China’s oldest language universities,teaching the biggest number of languages and offering education at different levels. Located in the Haidian District of Beijing,BFSU is divided into two campuses – the West Campus and the East Campus. In 1941, BFSU started as the Russian Language Team in the Third Branch of Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese Military and Political College. It was later renamed as Yan’an Foreign Languages School under the direct leadership of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the school was put under the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was renamed as Beijing Foreign Languages Institute in 1954 and merged with Beijing Russian Institute in 1959. Since 1980, the Institute was put under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. In 1994, it took on its current name Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). Today, BFSU teaches 67 foreign languages and offers education programs at different levels, including doctoral programs in foreign languages and literature, Chinese language and literature, journalism and communication, political science, law, management science and engineering, etc. In the past 74 years, over 90,000 people have graduated from BFSU. BFSU now serves as an important education base for qualified professionals with language competence who, after graduation, work as diplomats, translators/interpreters, businessmen, journalists, lawyers, bankers, etc. For example, among BFSU alumni who work or have worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have over 400 ambassadors and over 1000 counselors. BFSU is thus known as the “Cradle of Diplomats”.
Sichuan University
Sichuan University (SCU) is one of China’s top universities, attached to the Ministry of Education. It is located in Chengdu, a famous historical and cultural capital city of Sichuan Province, known as “the land of abundance”. It consists of three campuses: Wangjiang, Huaxi and Jiang’an. Sichuan University is an institution that comprises three former national universities: the former Sichuan University, the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology, and the former West China University of Medical Sciences. The former West China University of Medical Sciences, original West China Union University, was established by western Christian missionaries in Chengdu in 1910. SCU has undertaken and completed a considerable number of national, ministerial and regional research projects, and has made many achievements that are rated first class in China and bear significant international influence. The university publishes more than 4,000 research papers annually. In 2002, the university’s state and central government funding ranked fifth among Chinese universities; it was ranked seventh for the number of publications and eleventh for publications included in SCI. The citations ranked fifteenth among Chinese universities. The number of publications in science, engineering and medicine ranked sixth, and the citations ranked seventh among Chinese universities. In 2002, the university applied for 121 patents, 102 out of which were invention-oriented, making it number eight among other institutions. Sichuan University has established contacts and cooperative relationships with over 250 renowned colleges and universities as well as research institutes from 34 countries and regions. It has established well-rounded joint education programs of at different levels and in various forms with 214 famous universities from over 33 countries.
Nankai University
Nankai University (NKU) is a key multidisciplinary and research-oriented university directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and is located in Tianjin on the border of the sea of Bohai, is also the alma mater of late Premier Zhou Enlai. Nankai University was founded in 1919 by the famous patriotic educators, Mr. Zhang Boling and Mr. Yan Xiu. On December 25th, 2000 the State Ministry of Education signed an agreement with Tianjin Municipal Government on jointly establishing and developing Nankai University. Since then, Nankai University has been listed among universities for priority development in the 21st century. Nankai University is considered to be one of the most comprehensive universities with the widest scan of disciplines. It features a balance between the Humanities and the Sciences, a solid foundation and a combination of application and creativity. Nankai University has broad international communications by establishing exchanging and collaborative relationships with more than 300 international universities and academic institutions. Nankai University has contracted to build 7 Confucius institutes. In 2012, Nankai was awarded as Advanced Sino-cooperation Academy of Confucius Institute. NKU undertake the task of National Chinese Language Training to Foreign countries, launch a number of tasks of study abroad programs which are all in a relatively high level, including Oxford Program, participate in the Davos World University Leaders Forum, first batch “the new international Sinology research plan” carrying forward by State Hanban and advance the level of internationalization.
