DEPARTMENT OF EAST ASIAN STUDIES
Department of Asian Studies (DAS) was established in 2005 as part of the Institute of International Studies, at the Faculty of International and Political Studies of University of Lodz.
The department is chaired by prof. Małgorzata Pietrasiak. Academic interests of the DEAS faculty concentrate on political, economic, and social processes that take place in East Asia, political systems of countries of the region, their relations with other international actors, and on issues of ethnic and religious minorities. The research is mainly focused on three countries: China, Japan and, Vietnam.
Apart from research, the DEAS faculty also teach a wide variety of classes at the International Relations faculty. Together with the Department of Middle East and North African Studies, graduate courses specializing in oriental studies are offered.
The Department also carries out numerous Asia-related projects. Among others, the annual Lodz East Asian Meetings, which is an academic conference for young faculty and experienced scholars who deal with Asian affairs. There are study tours to different Asian countries as well. The Department closely cooperates with Student’s Associations of East Asia and Pacific.
CENTRE FOR ASIAN AFFAIRS
The Centre for Asian Affairs (CAA) is a think tank for local and central government authorities as well as business support institutions in Poland, Central Europe and broaden Europe operating in Asia.
The Centre for Asian Affairs is closely tied to the ever-increasing role of countries located in East Asia economically, politically and culturally, especially China, and the need to observe and monitor the processes occurring in the region. The rising significance of contacts (both business and personal), mainly in China, Japan, South Korea and in the near future South and South East Asia, calls for the creation of a think tank that will be able to provide advice regarding activities conducted by local and central governments as well as business support institutions in Asia. CAA fulfils an advisory and consultant role, while also establishing new contacts with Asian countries that will help conduct various activities at both the local and central government level. On the monthly basis CAA publishes six monitors: “China Monitor”, “Japan Monitor”, “Korean Peninsula Monitor”, “Vietnam Monitor”, “ASEAN Monitor” and “China in the Balkans Monitor”. Moreover, CAA publishes up-to-date commentaries on the recent dynamics in East Asian and in Asia-Europe relations.

DR KERRY BROWN – Executive Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, and Professor of Chinese Politics. Professor Kerry Brown is Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. He leads the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN) funded by the European Union and is an Associate Fellow on the Asia Programme at Chatham House, London. PROF. BOGDAN GÓRALCZYK – Former Ambassador to Thailand, Philippines and Myanmar/Burma, University of Warsaw. Bogdan Goralczyk is a Professor of the European Center of the University of Warsaw, former Chief of Policy Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (2001-2003) and longtime diplomat, among others, from 2003-2008 Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Thailand, the Philippines and the Union of Myanmar (Burma). PROF. VLADIMIR PORTYAKOV – Deputy Director, Institute for Far East Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He holds a Doctorate in Economics. His main interests are in Contemporary China: Policy, Economy, China in World Policy and Economy, Russian-Chinese Relations. He served as the Counselor, Embassy of Russian Federation in the PRC, Beijing, Deputy Director (China’s Economy), Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Moscow and Vice-president of the European Association for Chinese Studies. PROF. ASH NARAIN ROY – Director, Institute of Social Science, New Delhi. He received his doctorate in International Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He spent four years at El Colegio de Mexico, Mexico City in the 1980s as a visiting scholar. From 1990 to 2001, he worked with the Hindustan Times as Assistant Editor. In 1997, he was sent to Egypt and Jordan on UN’s fact-finding mission on the question of Palestine. He has participated and presented dozens of papers in international seminars and conferences on democracy, federalism, globalization and Indian foreign policy. For more information please check here.
PROF. WANG YIZHOU – is Professor of international Politics and Chinese Foreign Affairs and Associate Dean in the School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University, since late 2009. He has been the Chief editor of the magazine, World Economics and Politics (monthly), from 1998 to 2008 and the Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) at Beijing between 1998 and 2009.
