COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CHINESE STRATEGIC NARRATIVES AT THE ‘GROUP OF 77’ AND THE UNITED NATIONS FORUM (2013-2023)

Przemysław Ciborek and Raven Yip analysed the narratives of Chinese diplomacy at the general level United Nations forum and the „Group of 77” within the 2013-2023 period.

The research draws on an extensive collection of over three thousand statements and speeches by Chinese officials at the United Nations. This comparative study examines the narratives within the general United Nations forum and those specifically related to the Group of 77 (G77), revealing significant differences, particularly in the context of security issues. Chinese diplomacy tailors its messaging to resonate with Global South countries, addressing the specific needs of developing nations. This strategy secures their support during critical votes on issues such as human rights at the UN forum. Although Chinese diplomacy rhetorically downplays security issues within the G77 framework, this does not necessarily translate into international practice on a bilateral level. This approach is intended to desecuritize economic cooperation, contrasting to the Western approach. The entire CAA Paper is available here.
